Intensive work is ongoing to regenerate and extend the native bush and remove pest plants, with 65,000 new plantings planned as part of the development. To ensure Raumatiroa remains a sanctuary, an Incorporated Society representing the owners will manage land outside the owners’ lots as a conservation block.
Animal pest eradication and a dog and cat-free environment will mean that bird life is protected, including the national symbol, the flightless kiwi. It’s a place to retreat for people who share a desire to live with and within nature in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand that’s apart but easily in touch with the bustle of a big city.
The Rural sanctuary takes the name Raumatiroa, which translates to long summer. Ruamatiroa has recently gained consent and the regeneration is underway, the most dramatic transformation will happen next as powerlines disappear underground and sealed roads allow access to the 25 lifestyle lots.
