THE AREA

Ōkārito is a coastal settlement surrounded by ocean, estuary, sea cliffs, lush forest and unsurpassed views of the Southern Alps. This small village is now home to around 30 permanent residents, but it was once a gold mining boom town.

Ōkārito Lagoon is NZ’s largest unmodified wetland and as such a treasure for the wildlife. A coastal Lagoon, located 130 kms South of Hokitika, covering an area of around 12kms. The Lagoon is home to many species of wading birds including the rare ‘Kotuku’ or Eastern Great Egret, the Whataroa River very near Ōkārito is the Kotuku’s only breeding ground in NZ. At the Southern End of the Lagoon is the small beach village of Ōkārito, with an extremely low permanent population, it is the perfect place for a peaceful getaway. Activities include Eco-tours by Boat, Kayak hires & tours of the Lagoon and its many tributaries and bird watching. Easy walks & more challenging hikes are plentiful in the area and you might even spot a ‘Rowi’ which is NZ’s rarest Kiwi, it was thought to be a Brown Kiwi but is in fact an extremely rare species only found in Ōkārito, and is carefully managed by a DOC sanctuary.

Walk from the southern end of the Village down the Beach to Five Mile for stunning views of the icy Waiho River and the majestic Franz Josef Glacier, you may encounter NZ Fur Seals along the way or collect fresh Mussels off the rocks if the tide is right.
