Mowbray Deer Farm

Mowbray, a 1,211 hectare (more or less) freehold property, comprises approximately 300 hectares of deer fencing and is home to the historic Sutherland’s Hut, the oldest surviving back country shepherd’s Hut in NZ. The property is currently running approximately 1000 mixed-age Red Hinds and 170 mixed-age Angus Hereford Cross and Hereford cows as of 15 April 2025. Depending on the season, it also grazes 1400 Half Bred Hoggets from 1 Nov- 1 May, 70 R2 Beef Heifers from 1 Oct – 1 Jul, and up to 2,000 mixed-age Ewes for 6 months.

Subdivided into 12 worked paddocks and 4 hill blocks, with potential to increase production with further

development. 18 hectares of Lucerne and 20 hectares of swedes or kale sown annually meet the property’s wintering requirements.

A set of sheep yards with a modest 3-stand crutching shed (with 3 shearing plants), a combination deer and cattle yards, a loading bank, and Sutherland’s Hut make up the farm buildings. There are 2 satellite tailing yards on the hill blocks. The property features a combination of gravity-fed troughs and natural creeks, a solar-powered electric fence unit, and receives an annual application of 250kg of Sulphur Super on all paddocks – a very weed-free property.

A private 3-day Walking Track business is currently run from Sutherland’s Hut (operating for 20 years), and this 160-year-old Hut is a regular summer visit by the Moa Tours High Country Stations Trip.
