Murray grew up in the Bays and attended Glendowie College, so he knows the area like the back of his hand. He is highly regarded in the local community and has a reputation as someone driven to succeed at both work and play. He is an active member of the Remuera Golf Club and won the Remuera Golf Club Open as a teen. He was also a member of Auckland University's Gallagher Shield-winning rugby team in 1987 and spent a year playing professional rugby with the Italian club Messina.
