TIPS FOR SELLING YOUR HOME IN WINTER:

In winter, showing your house at its best is even more important. The skies are gloomier and the days shorter so make it feel like a refuge from the weather - warm, cosy and homely.

  • Turn the heaters up or the gas fires on when potential purchasers are viewing the property.
  • Clean the windows. The lower winter sun can reveal grime and make it look like the home hasn’t been well-maintained. Make the most of the light you have by cleaning the blinds and curtains and then opening them as wide as possible during daytime viewings.
  • Clean all lamps and light shades and put in high wattage bulbs unless you are trying to create a particular mood – perhaps in the bedroom. For evening viewings, turn lights on inside and outside the house if it’s gloomy.
  • Play soft classical music during inspections and open homes. It has been shown that people stay around longer if the music is soothing.
  • Set the scene and help the buyers see themselves living happily in this house. Make it feel like a home by putting a warm throw on the sofa or fold back a thick comforter on the bed. You could even set the table for a meal with good china and silver.
  • Eradicate all bad smells like smoke, pets etc. Have a plate of baking in the kitchen - anything with vanilla, cinnamon or yeast. Chocolate-chip cookies are a favourite. But don't overdo it, either. Scented candles in every room or those plug-in air fresheners can leave buyers wondering what you're trying to mask.
  • Maintain the outside of the house and remove any green mould on walls, decks and paths which might indicate a lack of sun reaching those areas.
