Barry entered the Real Estate Industry in July 1979.
Prior to that Barry had worked in the Travel Industry for varying periods with Duty Free Stores at Auckland International Airport, with the National Airways Corporation in both Auckland and Tauranga, with Associated Travel Agencies Ltd in Tokoroa and Hamilton as a Travel Consultant and as a Sales Representative at Mount Cook Airlines based in Auckland. Barry joined Coveny Real Estate in 1979 and later joined Ace Real Estate in 1980 where he specialised in residential and section sales including the marketing of the Ascot Mews, Waiwherowhero and Raungawari subdivisions.

After qualifying by exams in 1984 Barry was admitted as an Associate of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand in 1985. In 1987 Barry became a Partner and Director of Ace Real Estate Ltd that in 1997 began trading as Ray White United.

Barry spent some time as Manager of the Hamilton East Branch however in 1994 he returned to full time selling and since that change Barry has been:

- Top Sales person for Hamilton East Branch 1996 97
- In 1996 Barry joined the Million Dollar Club for Sales in excess of $6 Million of real estate value
- 2nd Top Salesperson for Hamilton East Branch 1997 - 98
- Top Auction lister Ray White Hamilton 1997 - 98
- Top Salesperson for Hamilton East branch 1998 - 99
- Top Auction lister Ray White Hamilton 2001 - 02
- Attained Premier Sales Status for Ray White NZ 2003

In November 1999, Ace Real Estate merged with Accent Realty Ltd (who previously traded as L J Hooker in Hamilton) and a new company Online Realty Ltd was created trading as Ray White Real Estate. From 2000 to 2006 inclusive the Hamilton City office or Ray White was the No 1 office in New Zealand on five occasions. In April 2005 Barry retired from the partnership in Online Realty Ltd after eighteen years of ownership
